Better Dead than in the Red

Last week, a longtime Carnegie Centre volunteer was eating a meal at the Carnegie cafeteria and began to choke on his food. The volunteer, who is paralyzed on one side, made his way to the counter where staff sell food, and collapsed.

A young metrosexual with long blond hair who operates the cash register, always with an undercurrent of resentment, acted quickly. He left his cash register and performed the Heimlich manoveur, putting his arms around the choking man and thrusting his rib cage upwards, twice. Then he went back to working the cash registrar. He didn't miss beat: the cash, the Heimlich manoveur, the cash. But the choking man wasn't improving, so a volunteer working alongside the cashier dishing up food, a huskier, physically stronger man, performed the Heimlich manoveur one more time, more forcefully. The food in the choking man's throat came gushing out onto the floor.

Life saved.

Roughly five minutes after the choking began, Skip Everall, head of Carnegie Security strides into the cafeteria, putting on his rubber gloves. Everall reprimanded the volunteer and the metrosexual multi-tasker. “You shouldn't have done that,” he scolded. “You're not qualified to do that.” Not qualified? To get hired at a City Community Centre cafeteria, an applicant has to have Basic First Aid.

“They don't want to get sued”, said a witness.

While most of your posts are so pointless, I find this story disturbing. Anyone who sees someone choking and has the ability to help, should.

It's pretty normal behaviour to help to try to help someone who is dying (choking).

Is the story missing something? Like when this Skip guy tried to reprimand the helpers, did they tell him to fuck off or throw food at him by chance?
That's what I would have done.

anon,

If you don't know by now that "this Skip guy" is capable of unprovoked and unjustified reprimands, you have missed the point of many posts on this blog.

Hard to get good help. I heard from someone that knows of the office gossip Skippy is moving to a co=op called 4 Sisters Something happened to his place. A fire I think. Anyway Paul Taylor apperntly lives there and has some pull and is getting him in.

4 sis is not too far from Carnegie. I've interviewed people there. If Skip is moving into the local neighbourhood, he will be meeting all kinds of people on the streets whom he has unfairly barred or otherwise abused power in relation to at Carnegie. He will actually have to encounter these people on the street as equals.

I see that the folks who saved the suffocating man didn't wait for the security guy to finish his Heineken manoveur. But one must look at it from the perspective of the management: that if ordinary folk do things like save lives, it means they don't have to die waiting on the good intentions and union staff to do it for them. And what would that lead to? People should not live if it's not at the good graces of the Paulists. People should quietly die for the good of the Order.

You know what? I'm a CUPE member and if I see someone dying, or choking, I'm going to help.

The constant CUPE Union bashing is beyond me! I guess CUPE members at Carnegie are real assholes or something and that you all seem to lump us all together.

Well good for you, you creeps!

I didn't hear that the blog owner jumped out of his or her seat to perform the "Heineken" (haha) manouvere.
WOW, how fucking clever of you!

Much of what we do on this blog is expose "poor bashing" by CUPE at Carnegie.

The heimlich manoveur incident was not dissed by Skip. He said T did a fantastic job and not to use the heimlich manoveur in public 'cause i involved a patten, Get your facts right.

I read: "I'm a CUPE member...."

So, that leaves me thinking, 'Brothers and Sisters in a union dedicated to collective bargaining.'

Then I read: "...you all seem to lump us all together."

And then: "WOW, how fucking clever of you!"

I seem to think that CUPE is a union of civic employees. Let's see.... A union to protect workers from the evil capitalist robber baron taxpayers.

Now, that's a manouvere [sic].
Or, as we see from our poor exploited city employees so brilliantly expressing things: ""WOW, how fucking clever of you!"
