Wednesday, July 23rd was welfare day. But this month's welfare cheque included a bonus to buy children back to school supplies. Here was how the government explained it in an insert with the cheque:
"This cheque includes the school start-up supplement. This supplement is $84 for each child aged 5-11 years and $116 for each child aged 12-18 years."
Why was the back to school supplement was dispersed so early? It could have been included with the next welfare cheque which will be issued on August 27th. This being a five-week welfare month -- most welfare months are four weeks long -- people will be tempted to dip into their back to school money just to get through the month.
The government also announced in the insert with the cheques that they have yet again changed the name of the ministry which hands out welfare cheques. It is now the Ministry of Housing and Social Development.

Povertarians Witholding Pay from Poor who Participated in Poverty Olympics
Povertarians who organized the Poverty Olympics are being criticized by poor people who feel ripped off. Poor people are claiming that they were led to believe that they would be paid an honorarium of $20 if they "volunteered" at the Poverty Olympics. Now Olympic organizers at the Carnegie Center Community Association [CAPP] won't pay up.
The excuse provided for not paying people, according to one poor person, is that too many "volunteers" showed up and the money is not available. Twenty dollars was no doubt attractive to people living, as CAPP's Jean Swanson claimed in her speech at the Poverty Olympics, at starvation welfare rates, people forced to do all kinds of demeaning things to get the money to survive.
Something to remember when you turn on your tv or open an newspaper and see an anti-poverty event: paying people cash honorariums or volunteer tickets/food vouchers is a regular method used by povertarians to entice the poor to participate in political events.

Back-to-School Welfare Cheques
Welfare cheques issued in British Columbia for the month of August contained a bonus for people with children in school full time. A note was included at the bottom of each cheque:
