Stabbing Near McDonalds Leaves Boy, 13, Dead

Update:
Stabbing victim, Chris Poeung, died late last night in hospital. He was born Mar. 3, 1994 and was 13 years old.

Witnesses saw the suspect leave the scene of the stabbing and hop on the #19 bus. Police reportedly took him off the bus as it headed up Kingsway. There are reports that a second person was also taken into custody but released.

There were a total of four teenagers stabbed. Three had injuries that were not life threatening.

The following article was posted yesterday, shortly after I left the scene of the stabbing.
----------------------------------------

A teenage girl called her mother today and told her to come to the parking lot at Terminal & Main. Her brother, Chris Poeung, had just been stabbed.

It was about 5:15 or 5:20 p.m. I had just left McDonalds next door with a take-out coffee in my hand. I saw a swarm of Asian teenagers, both male and female, crossing the parking lot at Main & Terminal -- the parking lot kitty corner from the Pacific Central Station -- headed towards McDonalds. Some of the boys in the huge group were fighting. But it seemed to be over quickly.

Then I saw about three boys looking back as they rushed from the parking lot, at least one of them holding a cell phone. I got the impression that for them this fight wasn't over. But I really didn't pay much attention and kept walking.

Then I heard some girls in the parking lot screaming as they stood over an individual lying on the pavement. I went over to see if I could help. There was a pool of blood around a young Asian man in a white track suit. The white top of his track suit was soaked in blood. It was obvious that he had been stabbed near the heart. He had also been stabbed on the chin.

I told the victim to hang on, that an ambulance was on the way. I kept repeating that. I had read about an accident victim who said that having a person beside them reassuring them that the ambulance was on the way was helpful. The victim seemed to have almost lost consciousness, and by the time help arrived would be completely unconscious. One of the teenage girls standing near the victim's feet began crying, a scared sounding crying.

Later another woman passerby crouched down and put her hands on the sides of the victim's head and talked softly to him, continuously. Yet another woman passing by was on her cell phone to police saying, "I didn't realize that I had witnessed a stabbing."

A young woman with long dark hair who looked like a teenager came over. She said she was the victim's sister. She had apparently not witnessed the stabbing but may have been with the large group of teenagers as it took her just a couple of minutes to get to the scene. She screamed for a second when she saw the massive amount of blood that her brother was lying in. A couple of minutes later, she got on her cell phone and called her mother. She was crouched beside me as she made the call asking her mother to come to the parking lot across from the Main St. Skytrain station, saying, "Somebody's been stabbed." She must have been pressed to provide more information over the phone as she then stated in a calm voice that it was Chris who had been stabbed.

"The suspect", I would later hear a female police officer say into her phone, "goes to Tupper School." I believe the officer also identified him as "Thai."

Just a few seconds after I had arrived in the parking lot to see if I could help, I noticed a local mechanic, Garrett, on his knees by the victim. Garrett, a very young looking 43 year old originally from Winnipeg, works at a car repair shop nearby and drops into McDonald's almost daily to have coffee with local residents.

Garrett was using his bare hands to apply pressure over the wound by the victim's heart. He kept his hands there until the fire department paramedics arrived about 10 minutes later.

Later as he washed the blood off his hands with a cleansing gel police had given him, I asked Garrett, who I know from the McDonalds koffee klatch, "How did you know to do that?" He said he had taken a first aid course as "a form of self-improvement" two months ago out in Surrey where he has just moved. (He used to live on a boat behind McDonalds in False Creek, until all the boat squatters got evicted.) "That was good timing," I said.

It had seemed to take a long time for the paramedics to arrive: I would say 10-12 minutes, but I wasn't wearing a watch. And because everybody standing around was desperately waiting for the ambulance, time may have seemed to go slowly. The Vancouver Police were first to arrive, then the Fire Department paramedics, then the first of two ambulances. When the first police car arrived, I said to the female officer, "Where's the ambulance? We've been waiting ten minutes." She ignored me and looked at the victim.

The female police officer made the same call that a number of others had already made on cell phones, a request for an ambulance. She said into her phone, as she squatted by the victim's head, he was "not doing well." The officer then took over the job of talking to the victim. At one point, I thought the victim had died; he went completely still but then seemed to get a second wind and took a couple of deep breaths. I said to his sister, "You talk to him, he knows your voice." She leaned in toward him and started to speak but the police officer told her to move back and give him more space. The officer continued talking to him.

When the first paramedics from the Fire Department did get to the victim, three of them worked swiftly and calmly, putting a clear plastic mask over his mouth and cutting off his blood-drenched shirt. About five minutes later, the ambulance showed up. Then a woman showed up, who I believe may have been the mother of the victim. She stood outside the yellow police tape surrounding the scene and spoke to the sister.

A second victim, a young male with a bloody wound to his arm, sat on a curb in the parking lot near where the first had been laying. He was tended to by paramedics and may have been put in a second ambulance that arrived.

A young male police officer politely gave the order that nobody was to leave the scene. Police corralled everybody at the side of the parking lot, on the grass. They spoke to the sister and several witnesses, many of whom were teenagers. After about 10 minutes, police let me go as I had really not paid attention to the faces of any of those involved in the fight.

Garrett was still trying to get the blood off his hands. He pointed to the bottle of cleansing gel on the grass and asked, "Could you squirt more of that on my hands?"

A stocky, middle-aged firemen walked over to us and asked Garrett for his name, after the ambulance had left. The fireman commented that the victim had lost a lot of blood. He made a point of commending Garrett: "That kid has a chance because of you."

I wrote the article that is posted here. I felt sad when I learned this morning that Chris Poeung had died. I still feel sad.

Another resident of the Downtown Eastside told me last night that he had heard on the radio that the victim was in critical condition in hospital. I was hoping he would pull through.

I feel sorry for Chris Poeung's mother. My mind keeps thinking of what she must be going through, and the rest of the family too.

it wasn't a fist fight, they also had the intent on hurting thai too. and not with their fists either.

to all who think that this was a gang related fight, it was not, and to those who said that what are you thinking carrying a knife, it was for self defense, he did not want to do it, but think about it, if you were getting beat up by 4 people, with 30 people with them surrounding you, and your friend just stood there not helping you, what would you do if you had a knife on you? its common sense, you have to think about thai too, hes prob feeling so dramatized right now, and its not his fault in a way, if your friends are fighting and you saw that knife, theres 30 of you, 30 people can take down one guy with one weapon, but none of them did that, so you gotta think about it, those who were at the fight, you guys coulda did something, but its a little to late, to take it back

Anonymous said...

30 vs 2... THAI was scared thats why he had a knife. What the hell is he going to do let 30 ppl rush him and maybe THAI would die. THAI was only trying to defend himself. Now kids should smarten up and stop screwing around.

I think that everyone is clearly missing the point, and that is two young lives have been stolen, and one will never be able to put his back together because he was murdered. The CHOICES that were made that night, and happened in the span of seconds, will ultimately live with those that were at the scene, but moreover the CHOICES made that night will affect thousands of people directly or indirectly. Family, friends, teachers, coaches, students, etc will all be haunted by this tragic incident. To lay blame on anyone is useless, and a waiste of time, and will likely only create more anomosity between friends of these young people, who will want to seek some vengeance.

Reality is when you carry a weapon for self defence, you should probably consider your lifestyle. If you need a weapon, you should ask why. Again this leads me back to CHOICES, if you carry a weapon, ask yourself "Am I willing to Kill someone in the event that I need it?" If you ask the young man who killed Chris, I bet he would say something that may suprise you.

I do not have any idea of what transpired that night, all I know is that the hurt, and pain people feel today, was not something thought about when the CHOICE to pull out a knife and stab someone in the chest was made. Life is about CHOICES, and sometimes those CHOICES cost people their lives.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Family of Chris, and God Bless his soul.

Anonymous said...

before all of you blame each other, think about the situation they were both in. obviously thai didn't intend to kill someone .. they were only 13-14 years old. they aren't old enough to realize that someone COULD die.

and i agree, life is about choices. for all those who are blaming one another, know that what's done is done. don't try to seek revenge or you might take another life away.

Anonymous said...

Man ok I didn't know the kid was defensive but dont fuckin call me a moron. This Thai kid still deserves what he gets. Kids these days are ridiculous. Carrying knives all the time. If you are carrying a knife it means you are ready to kill somebody. If you are not ready to kill someone, you shouldn't be carrying one.

Youth court Manslaughter? The kid will probably get 3-5 years unless they raise him up to adult court. Then he will get life in prison.

Once again, RIP Chris. I didn't know you but 13 is too young.

Anonymous said...

This is very upsetting but stop blaming, and theres no need for name calling. I don't know why a knife was brought to the fite but we don't know the circumstance the kid(Thai) was in. Stop blaming. I understand that kids should not carry knives as well, but its a bad decision that was made, who knows other kids coud've been carrying one too.
Anyways RIP Chris P., I didn't know you but no one deserves to get killed. I hope that this all goes down all rite and everyone is forgiven and that justice prevails for the Peoung family. Take care and god be with you- Chris P., Thai N. and Peoung family.
And one last thing, theres no point in mentioning that thai goes to tupper, what are you intending by adressing that he's a tupper student. All that matters is that he was a kid of age 14 and he made a wrong decision, no need to bring a school into the picture.

fucking kids these days fukin sertously over a girl? fuk im from tupper and now ppl gonna talk more shit about it. fukin these kids gotta fukin find better ways to do with ur times and why the fuck are u ppl carriing knives with you ppl? are u ppl retarded

Anonymous said...

My condolence to the Peoung family.

I don't know any of these kids but growing up in the Chinatown/Downtown area and knowing what happens down there, people need protection. Personally, I carry mace. Those who are naive and say that this Thai guy is going around stabbing people is straight up B.S. It was self-defence.

On top of that, a group of 4 kids tried to jump on 2 kids???? I would have been scared too. Thai was defending himself. It was either him or them. Don't say you wouldn't have done the same, if you were put in that situation.

Also, what is wrong with the other 26 friends who could have stopped the fight from happening??? They stood there while there friends got stabbed. How is it that 26 friends couldn't have stopped the "one" with the knife???

Thai had the "choice" and he made the wrong one. He's 14 and he'll have a long time to think about being responsible for taking someone's life and ruining someone's family. It's enough Thai bashing from those who are doing it.

Chris had a "choice" and he made the wrong one too. He chose to get involed in the fight against Thai and he paid with his life but noone deserves to die.

There isn't anyone to blame. There were just alot of horrible decisions that were made and lead to something tragic.

It's sad that the Chinatown/Downtown area has turned into such a horrible place to be and the youth of today are making such horrible decisions.

May god be with you Chris and the Peoung family.
Good Luck to Thai and the Nguyen family.

People die everyday. Not surprised.
The society we live in today is partly to blame.
The influences of media and peer pressure.
The parents are to blame as well for not instilling in their children respect and self worth.
The choices those kids made to stereotype themselves.
How the oppressed and minorities always makes excuses for their actions.
Feel no sympathy for these kids for they chose the path of action they took.

Anonymous said...

Why did it have to be a knife?
Why couldn't he carry something else OTHER than a knife?

They MADE the choices, so they'll have to pay the price.

Although, I still feel that Chris shouldn't have died.

Just wondering, did Thai just randomly slash at the closest ones around? =\

Anyway, RIP Chris Poeung. And best of luck to Thai. People, just take a minute of your life and stand in his shoes, what would you do?

Damn. Why do things like this have to happen?
Why can't people not include voilence and deal with it in a different way.
I don't think anyone should blame Thai though... maybe he was carrying around a knife for the reason that he knew something was gonna go down.
But Chris...RIP.

Someone Died in a Result of Violence.... Old news pretty much (sorry to be blunt)

everyday someone dies by taking the wrong options. the cause of this is society.
just like now people are assuming the worst before they could even hear the whole story.
and suprisingly they make assumptions even though they werent there.

i doubt that this scenario was intentional. mainly due to the fact that there are 30 people there.

lets say thai brought out the knife to intimidate the opposition.
now lets ask the question *was the opposition really intimidated? the opposition had the chance to fight or flee didnt they?*

the thing is we often oblivious to every single fact or event that happens throughout the world unless it happens near our doorsteps.
when something tragic like this happens most people takes sides(the victims or the suspect) and blast through the oppositions.
you gotta take account what was going through their minds.

self defense or murder?
depends really on the person taking sides doesnt it?

if you were so attached to the victim would you say its self defense?
how bout the alleged suspect? would you say its murder?

oh and past this is IMO

to those who bash tupper as a *gansta wannabe school* you couldnt be more wrong.
tupper is a friendly enviroment if you know what you are doing and not too careless.
i know there are some students who are racist toward other students. put that aside.
i dont think tupper can even be titled as *gangsta wanna be's* sure a minority of students are but
that doesnt mean the majority of the student population are.

a certain individual died in tupper. his name was jomar lanot, after his death the students mourned and they decided to do something
they formed a group TSAT then convinced the city hall to build a memorial for jomar lanot.
i don't think that a gangsta wanna be school would do such a heart warming thing wouldn't you?
i know this for a fact that tupper IS DEFINATELY NOT a hostile student body.
i know this because im in almost all the clubs in tupper and almost every single person i meet in the hall way is friendly.

and if we were very hostile then we would've retaliated on killarney.

if a person is carrying a weapon that doesn't mean he is violent as heart.
sometime people get intimidated and know only one thing that could give them support or assurance.

hell u can even look at my closet and find a katana a bow a mace a battle axe some swords some shuriken some other medieval weaponry. but then you wouldn't see me around bashing kids with a mace.
sometimes it takes a great deal of self esteem to do what is right. also you gotta deal with peer pressure.

If Thai was killed, then everyone will be blaming Chris and the other guys, but it's just too bad that Chris is the one who passed away. and the court is gonna give what they thing Thai deserves, but why do people have to threaten him? and Chris is dead, he's safe already, and what does Thai have to go threw now? Honestly, if I was on Thai's show, I would've done the same thing. I just wish the best for Thai, because I'm definitely sure that he didn't mean to do it, and rest in peace to Chris.

And oh yeah, it's better that Thai is in the cops' hands, because if he's out, people are going to come after him and do what they THINK thai deserves.

Take caare Thais s2

You live once and you die once.
But the tears we cry will come over & over again.
And ocean. We cried an ocean full of tears.
But nonetheless it was of no use.
Because not even an ocean full of tears,
could ever bring them back.
RIP CHRISNA POEUNG.

The biggest step is forgiveness. Please find it in your heart to forgive, if we can all find it in our hearts to forgive someone wouldn't have died.

RIP Chris,
Didn't think Thai had it in him.

rip.. a lot of poeple don't pay attention to this.. i would feel bad for thai, but it seems like he hasn't changed at all..

I agree with the person above me ^
Thai doesn't seem to have changed at all.

Like that time he make a HUGE deal over french fries.

What the fuck ?

Tupper is a great school.
It shouldn't have someone like him in it !

I hope he smartens up soon.

Life's a bitch. Death is easy. I died May 19, 2007 and became someone I hate.

Hahaha, Let's put it this way into Thai's position. Your at metrotown mall. Being followed by 20 guys and girls. As you get on to the skytrain more and more people from the same group get on. Everyone is staring at you. They stock you till main station. Your with one other friend going to a basketball game. And they confront you. Hey kiss my shoe or im going to kick your ass. What option does he really have. Knowing these nammers they probably boot him in the face and kick his ass anyways if he were to kiss his shoe. You walk away and then get attacked from behind with batons and pipes. And during that moment of time for some odd reason you decided to carry a knife on you that day which i know he doesnt ever carry. Would you use the knife in order to save your life? Not saying it was the right call, but if i were in his position and had to react in anyway. And made sure i did more than just get one or two guys. Thai hasn't really changed? oh yeah he has. I cant even be close to him anymore. It's because of all of you guys that i've lost one of my closes friends. He's always to himself. Never has any emotions. He hides his pains from everyone with his fake smiles and laughs. He doesn't allow anyone to be friends with him because he doesn't trust no one. I would hate to live like that. You guys have crushed the most motivating and happy person that i know. You made him hate the world, most people and also himself. Wouldn't like to him like that everyday to put on a fake smile so your love ones and can think your fine

RIP CP - Good Die Young

Good luck Thai Hopefully you let up on yourself
